L’appellativo di “chiodo” è unicamente italiano e si riferisce probabilmente all’usanza punk di custodire un chiodo nella tasca di questo capospalla. Si deve ad un aviatore tedesco, Manfred von Richthofen-il famoso Barone Rosso- l’invenzione del giubbotto di pelle, inizialmente chiamato “flying jacket” e adorato dai piloti americani per la sua resistenza e comodità. Venne poi realizzato anche per i motociclisti dai fratelli Schott: lo chiamarono“Perfecto”, ispirandosi alla forma a siluro dei famosi sigari cubani. Nel dopoguerra per la sua robustezza fu scelto come uniforme della polizia americana e per lo stesso motivo negli anni 50 venne adottato dai bikers che si radunavano in bande per partecipare a gare di velocità con le moto. Indimenticabili Marlon Brando e James Dean nei film cult sulla generazione ribelle dell’epoca. E nel 1960 Yves Saint Laurent ne decretò il successo anche sulle passerelle. Il vero boom di questo capospalla avvenne negli anni Settanta con Vivienne Westwood, la nascita dello stile punk e dei giubbotti chiodati. Da allora è diventato un capo iconico della moda, oggi perfetto con i look più svariati.
